Akwatia by-election: Don’t be afraid to come out and vote – Palgrave

As the Akwatia by-election approaches on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, residents of the constituency have been urged to exercise their voting rights without fear, amid assurances of heightened security.

Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, made the appeal following the deployment of 600 security personnel to the area to guarantee a safe and orderly electoral process.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah emphasized that the security presence is intended to protect voters rather than intimidate them. “No one should be afraid to come out and vote. Do not be intimidated at all. The presence of security and the Electoral Commission is to ensure the election is incident-free and peaceful because of the history of past incidents in Akwatia,” he said.

The former spokesperson also encouraged constituents to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Asumadu, underscoring the importance of strong voter turnout. “It is important that you come and vote for the New Patriotic Party candidate. The high presence of security is for your peace and safety. Vote massively for the NPP candidate, and let’s ensure that Akwatia remains blue,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah added.

The parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of MP Ernest Kumi, prompting this by-election. Given the constituency’s history of election-related tensions, authorities have taken extra measures to ensure a peaceful environment, deploying additional officers and coordinating closely with the Electoral Commission.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno also reassured voters that the Ghana Police Service is fully committed to maintaining law and order during the by-election period. Officers will remain on high alert to prevent disruptions and ensure that every eligible voter can cast their ballot safely.

Authorities continue to urge voters to follow official election guidelines and report any suspicious activity that could threaten the integrity of the poll.
