King Mohammed VI welcomes historic UN endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan
His Majesty King Mohammed VI addressed the Moroccan nation on Friday evening following the United Nations Security Council’s landmark vote in favor of the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, describing it as a decisive and historic moment in Morocco’s modern history and in the decades-long Sahara issue.
In his speech, the Monarch hailed the vote as a “manifest victory” for peace, dialogue, and legitimacy, marking the beginning of a new chapter that reaffirms Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“After fifty years of sacrifices, and with the help and guidance of the Almighty, we are starting a new chapter in the process of consolidating the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” His Majesty said. “There is a before October 31, 2025, and an after October 30.”
A New National and Diplomatic Milestone
Delivered on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Green March and the 70th anniversary of Morocco’s independence, the royal speech placed the UN decision within the broader framework of Morocco’s diplomatic achievements and enduring commitment to regional stability.
King Mohammed VI noted that this UN resolution symbolizes the culmination of five decades of persistence and a strategic shift from “managing” the Sahara conflict to “changing the situation.”
According to the Sovereign, two-thirds of UN Member States now consider the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the only credible and realistic framework for resolving the dispute—an evolution that confirms the effectiveness of Morocco’s diplomatic vision and consistency on the international stage.
Strengthened International Support
His Majesty underlined the growing international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, highlighting decisions by major global players—the United States, France, Britain, Russia, Spain, and the European Union—to strengthen trade and investment ties with the region.
This new dynamic, he said, consolidates Morocco’s position as a regional hub for stability and economic growth, serving as a bridge between the Maghreb, the Sahel, and sub-Saharan Africa.
“Our southern provinces can now become a hub for development and stability, and a major economic centre in the region,” the King affirmed.
The Monarch also announced that Morocco will update and submit an enhanced version of its Autonomy Initiative to the United Nations, which will serve as the sole and legitimate framework for negotiation.
Gratitude and a Call for Reconciliation
Expressing gratitude to Morocco’s international partners, King Mohammed VI extended special thanks to the United States, under President Donald Trump, as well as to France, Spain, and Britain, for their “constructive and tireless efforts in support of right and legitimacy.”
The Sovereign also praised the consistent backing of Arab and African nations that have defended Morocco’s territorial integrity. Yet, in a tone of humility and reconciliation, he emphasized that Morocco does not view these diplomatic successes as a “victory” to be exploited, but rather as an opportunity to build peace.
“Morocco remains committed to finding a solution where there are no winners or losers – a solution that preserves the dignity of all parties,” the King said.
He issued a heartfelt appeal to Moroccans in the Tindouf camps to reunite with their families and contribute to building a unified homeland under the Autonomy framework, stressing that all citizens enjoy equal rights within the Kingdom.
A Hand Extended to Algeria and the Maghreb
In a significant regional gesture, the Monarch called upon Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune to engage in a “sincere, brotherly dialogue” to rebuild relations based on trust and good neighborliness.
Reaffirming his long-standing vision for regional unity, the King reiterated Morocco’s commitment to reviving the Arab Maghreb Union on principles of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.
Tribute to National Sacrifice and Legacy
As Morocco prepares to celebrate the Green March’s 50th anniversary, His Majesty paid homage to the inhabitants of the southern provinces for their loyalty and sacrifices, as well as to Moroccan diplomacy, security forces, and the Royal Armed Forces for their tireless defense of the nation’s sovereignty.
He closed his address with a prayerful remembrance of His late Majesty King Hassan II, the architect of the Green March, and all martyrs who gave their lives for Morocco’s unity and freedom.
“The comprehensive development, security, and stability enjoyed by our southern provinces are the result of the sacrifices made by all Moroccans,” the King concluded.
