2026 SHS placement: Physician Assistant arrested in Kumasi over alleged GH¢8,500 fraud

A Physician Assistant at SDA Hospital in Kumasi, Yaw Adjei Boateng, has been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged fraud linked to Ghana’s 2026 school placement exercise.

Boateng reported to the Unit on Thursday, September 24, 2026, and was formally arrested. He was subsequently interrogated by the Unit Commander, DSP Michael Bernard Adjei, and his deputy, DSP/Alhaji Mohammed Hanan.

During interrogation, Boateng told investigators that he knew Vicentia Antwi Appiah and had spoken with her several times by telephone, although he had never met her in person.

“The suspect said he knows Vicentia Antwi Appiah and has spoken with her several times by telephone, though he has never met her in person.”

According to the statement, Vicentia contacted Boateng to help secure placement for Benedicta Yaa Edinam at Mafe Methodist Girls’ SHS.

Boateng said he received GH¢8,500 from Vicentia and forwarded the money to his former schoolmate, Brian Opare Addo, who works at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, to facilitate the placement.

“He said he received GH¢8,500.00 from Vicentia, then sent the money to a former schoolmate, Brian Opare Addo, who works at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, to help facilitate the placement.”

The placement was unsuccessful, according to the suspect.

Boateng said he subsequently instructed Addo to return the money to Vicentia and told investigators that the refund was made.

“He said he later instructed Brian Opare Addo to return the money to Vicentia, and that this was done.”

He also disclosed that he had previously secured a placement for another person at St. Monica’s SHS through Addo.

“The suspect also stated that the previous year, he had successfully secured placement for someone at St. Monica’s SHS through the same Brian Opare Addo.”

As part of the investigation, Addo has been invited to report to the Intelligence Unit on Monday, September 28, 2026.

“On the instruction of the Unit Commander, Brian Opare Addo has been invited to report to the Intelligence Unit on Monday, 28/09/2026, to assist with the investigation.”

The Unit said, “Investigation is ongoing, please.”

Vicentia Antwi Appiah, who is named in the latest investigation, is one of two women previously arrested over alleged school placement fraud.

The two women were reportedly accused of charging prospective students or their families as much as GH¢22,000 to secure placements in preferred senior high schools.
