NPP General Secretary admits party faces toughest period after 2024 defeat

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has admitted that the party is enduring one of its most turbulent times following its 2024 election defeat.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kodua stressed that the gravity of the situation cannot be ignored. “We cannot pretend. The NPP is in a very difficult and delicate situation,” he said.
He acknowledged that as preparations for the NPP’s presidential primaries intensify, the atmosphere is bound to generate tension, mistrust, and even backstabbing among party members.
However, he insisted that the role of leadership is to remain firm, neutral, and fair to maintain unity. “We are all doing our best.
As General Secretary, I must remain neutral because if not, by the end of everything, there will be problems,” he added.
Responding to criticism that the national executives have failed in their duties, Mr Kodua explained that circumstances had forced him to assume extra responsibilities.
With National Chairman Stephen Ntim unwell, he said he had to step in until First National Vice Chairman Smith Butey began assisting.
The General Secretary revealed that the party is currently expanding its Electoral College and updating its delegate register following resolutions from the national delegates conference in July 2025.
He assured that the party’s IT team is working diligently to produce a credible and comprehensive polling album.
On demands for sanctions against members accused of misconduct, Mr Kodua made clear the limits of his authority.
“It is not in my power to sanction or dismiss people from the party. Article 4 of the Constitution spells out the processes. My role is administrative, compiling the album and speaking as spokesperson, but there is a limit,” he explained.
He concluded with a football analogy, comparing his position to that of a star player needing collective support: “As the General Secretary, we may be like Lionel Messi on the field, but if you don’t have adequate support, you will be fruitless.”
