Policeman killed by gunmen in Sampa

Tension has gripped the Sampa township in the Bono Region after masked gunmen launched a deadly attack on Sunday afternoon, killing a police officer and leaving residents terrified.
The incident, which occurred in the heart of the border community, sparked chaos as gunfire rang out across several neighbourhoods.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen, believed to be members of rival groups, arrived on motorbikes and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing traders and residents to run for their lives. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but initial reports suggest it may be linked to an ongoing feud between two factions in the area.
Today.com.gh gathered that the slain policeman was caught in the crossfire as the assailants exchanged gunshots with local security personnel. The officer, whose name is yet to be released, was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. Several others reportedly sustained injuries and are receiving medical care at nearby facilities.
Following the attack, the Ghana Police Service swiftly deployed additional security personnel to Sampa to restore calm. Armed officers and military reinforcements are now patrolling key areas, including the central business district and border routes, to prevent further clashes.
“The situation has been contained for now, but the atmosphere remains tense,” Ofori-Akumah said, adding that residents fear a possible reprisal attack. Many shops remain closed, and public gatherings have been suspended as authorities investigate the motive and identities of those involved.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement, though sources say a high-level team from the regional command has been dispatched to the area. Investigators are gathering evidence to determine whether the attack is connected to recent criminal activities along the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire border.
Local leaders have appealed for calm and urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased officer has been taken to the morgue as the Police Service prepares to brief the public on the ongoing operation.
