Bagbin appointed to mediate in Russia-Ukraine war

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been appointed as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to a statement issued by the Parliamentary Service on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, the appointment recognizes Speaker Bagbin’s “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties.” He joins seven other distinguished parliamentarians representing all six IPU geopolitical groups on the Task Force.
The President of the IPU expressed confidence that Mr. Bagbin’s leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to promote diplomatic dialogue between the two warring nations. “We are confident that your leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine,” the IPU Secretary-General, Martin Chungong, stated in a letter announcing the appointment.
The IPU Task Force, established in March 2022, was created to facilitate parliamentary dialogue and peace efforts between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Since its inception, it has held more than ten meetings, including missions to Kyiv and Moscow, to foster engagement between both sides.
The Task Force has also organized periodic consultations with parliamentary delegations from Ukraine and Russia every six months during IPU Assemblies. These meetings serve as one of the few remaining platforms for continued dialogue amid the conflict.
Speaker Bagbin’s inclusion is expected to inject renewed diplomatic vigor into the IPU’s mediation process. As part of his new role, he will attend in-person meetings during IPU Assemblies, participate in hearings with Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and engage government leaders toward achieving a lasting peace settlement.
The statement, signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament, emphasized that Speaker Bagbin’s appointment points out Ghana’s growing reputation for peace diplomacy and constructive engagement on global security matters.
