Int’l Women’s Day: Lordina rallies Ghanaians to support women left behind

First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to support women and girls who remain disadvantaged as the world marks International Women’s Day.

In her message marking the 2026 observance, Mrs. Mahama called on Ghanaians to take deliberate action to empower women and girls, particularly those who continue to face barriers in education, leadership and economic opportunities.

“Together, we must go back and lift every woman and girl we may have left behind, for in their rise, Ghana rises,” she stated.

She stressed that advancing gender equality requires practical steps from individuals, communities and institutions.

“As we observe International Women’s Day 2026, I encourage every Ghanaian to reflect on what you will Give to Gain gender equality,” Mrs. Mahama said.

The First Lady also urged families and communities to support the education and empowerment of girls in the same way boys are encouraged.

“Will you mentor a young woman starting her own business? Will you advocate for your daughter’s education as passionately as you do for your son’s?” she asked.

Mrs. Mahama explained that investing in women has far-reaching benefits for the country’s development and prosperity.

“Always remember that investing in women brings benefits. When women succeed, families flourish, communities thrive, and the nation advances,” she noted.

She also pointed to Ghana’s cultural traditions of mutual support as a model for strengthening efforts to empower women and girls.

“Our mothers and grandmothers gave us rich traditions of communal support through ‘nnoboa’ and ‘susu’. We must channel that same spirit toward achieving true gender equality,” she said.

Mrs. Mahama further urged Ghanaians to demonstrate solidarity and commitment in ensuring that women and girls across the country have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to national progress.

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, recognises the achievements of women across the world while highlighting the need for continued efforts to achieve gender equality.
