Baba Jamal to be sworn in as Ayawaso East MP today

Baba Jamal, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, is set to take his oath of office today, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Parliament House in Accra.

The ceremony will be presided over by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, formally ushering the MP-elect into Ghana’s legislative chamber.

The by-election, conducted on March 3, 2026, was organised to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following the death of former MP Mahama Naser Toure in January. Contesting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal won with a clear mandate from the electorate.

Official results show that Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes, defeating his main rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda came third with 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu and Kanor David received 43 and 104 votes, respectively.

A total of 16,928 valid ballots were recorded during the by-election, with 120 rejected votes, bringing the overall turnout to 17,048 voters.

Following the declaration of the results by the Electoral Commission, Baba Jamal expressed profound appreciation to the people of Ayawaso East for trusting him with the parliamentary mandate. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the position and promised to dedicate himself to serving the constituency effectively.

In a message posted on Facebook on Monday, March 9, ahead of the swearing-in, the MP-elect expressed his humility and commitment to the people he will represent.

“Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he wrote.

With today’s swearing-in, Baba Jamal will officially take his seat in Parliament and begin representing the interests of his constituents at the national level. The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and is expected to attract political leaders, supporters, and members of the public.

Observers note that Baba Jamal’s victory strengthens the NDC’s presence in Parliament and underscores the confidence the people of Ayawaso East have placed in him to advance their legislative and developmental priorities. As he assumes office, constituents will look to him to address local challenges, advocate for development projects, and ensure their voices are heard at the national level.
