Police gun down 2 robbers, seize car, rifles on Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway

The Ashanti South Police Command has shot dead two armed robbers and arrested several others along the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway.
DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaabah, Regional Commander, said at a media briefing in Bekwai on March 10, 2026, that credible intelligence indicated a gang of armed men had gathered in a bush along the highway to plan a robbery.
A police team sent to the area near Obuasi encountered four armed men, who opened fire on the officers. Police returned fire, fatally wounding two suspects, who were later pronounced dead at a hospital. One AK47 assault rifle, a pump-action gun, and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
The deceased were identified as David Aheto, 42, from Sogakope in the Volta Region and a resident of Assin Fosu, and Illiasu Bawa, 32, a native of Banda Nkwanta in the Savanna Region. Both men were linked to multiple armed robbery cases in Obuasi, Wassa Akropong, and Assin Fosu.
Other gang members, including Samuel Adjei, also known as “Africa,” are on remand at Wassa Akropong. Abdallah Alhassan, Jemimi Usman, Amine Iddrisu (alias 0244), and Daniel Debrah remain in police custody assisting investigations.
Investigations revealed that Alhaji Abdallah of Asawase in Kumasi sold the recovered AK47 to the gang for GHC45,000.
A follow-up operation on March 11, 2026, led to the arrest of Amine Iddrisu (0244), who guided police to the recovery of an AK47 and a Bruni pistol. Daniel Debrah, 24, was also apprehended, and a search of his property led to the seizure of a Toyota Saloon car, believed to be linked to loot from David Aheto’s criminal activities.
DCOP Nyaabah said the Ashanti South Police Command remains committed to dismantling armed robbery gangs in the region and encouraged the public to provide intelligence to support operations.
The arrests, seizure of firearms, and recovery of a vehicle mark a significant step in combating violent crimes along one of the region’s most notorious highways.
