Bolga-Walewale highway: Police grab two suspected notorious armed robbers

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspected armed robbers linked to a series of deadly attacks in the Bolgatanga metropolis and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway.
The suspects, identified as Moses Akungoe, popularly known as “Mosbee,” and Jacob Akugri, also known as “Weezy,” were arrested in Kumasi on May 9, 2026, following weeks of intelligence-led operations by the CID Headquarters Operations Unit.
According to the Police Service, the operation involved extensive surveillance activities conducted in Bolgatanga and Walewale before the suspects were tracked and apprehended in the Ashanti Region.
A statement shared by the Ghana Police Service on X on Monday said preliminary investigations had established that the two men were members of a dangerous robbery syndicate operating across the Upper East and North East Regions.
Police said the gang was heavily armed with two AK-47 rifles and pistols which they allegedly used to carry out robberies on highways and within communities.
The suspects are believed to have attacked several victims, making away with cash, motorbikes and mobile phones during their operations.
Investigators also suspect the robbery gang was involved in violent incidents that resulted in multiple deaths along some highways in the two regions.
The Police Service did not immediately disclose whether weapons or other exhibits were retrieved during the arrests but indicated that investigations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang.
The Bolgatanga-Walewale highway has in recent years recorded a number of armed robbery attacks, raising concerns among travellers and commercial drivers who frequently use the route.
Residents and commuters have repeatedly appealed for intensified security patrols and intelligence operations to curb criminal activity along the stretch.
The latest arrests are expected to bring some relief to residents and road users who have expressed fears over increasing highway robberies in parts of northern Ghana.
