Bulgaria considers ‘Genuine Autonomy Under Moroccan Sovereignty Could be a Viable Solution’ to Moroccan Sahara Issue

Bulgaria considers that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be a viable solution” to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
This stance was expressed in a Communiqué issued following a telephone conversation held Tuesday between Bulgaria’ Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova and her Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
In light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, “Bulgaria recognizes that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution to the dispute,” the Communiqué says.
The document further emphasizes that “Bulgaria reaffirms that it considers the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco in 2007 to be a serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
This position is part of the efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Morocco and Bulgaria and illustrates the international momentum generated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy plan.
Meanwhile, the Republic of Mali has reiterated its “position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region,” while reaffirming its support for the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco as “the only credible and realistic solution for resolving this regional dispute.”
This stance was expressed in the Joint Communiqué adopted at the close of the 4th High-Level Joint Commission on Morocco-Mali Cooperation, which concluded Friday in Bamako under the co-chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita, and Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdoulaye Diop.
The Joint Communiqué “reiterated the Republic of Mali’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, as well as for the Autonomy Plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, as the only credible and realistic solution for resolving this regional dispute, in accordance with Resolution 2797 adopted on October 31, 2025, by the United Nations Security Council.”
This position follows on from the Malian government’s Declaration of April 10, 2026, announcing the Republic of Mali’s official withdrawal of its recognition of the so-called separatist entity “sadr”.
The 4th session of the Joint Cooperation Commission between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Mali was held on July 21-24 in Bamako.
