ECOWAS pledges US$250,000 to support Ghana flood victims

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged US$250,000 (about GH¢3 million) to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Ghana.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press statement issued on August 2, 2026, describing the donation as a gesture of solidarity with Ghana.

According to the Ministry, ECOWAS has formally notified the government of its decision to provide financial assistance to aid recovery efforts.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that it has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GHS3.00 million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods.”

The Ministry assured the public that the funds would be transferred to the appropriate beneficiaries immediately after they are received.

“As can be expected, the Foreign Ministry will hand over the entire funds as soon as we receive it in our accounts.”

The government also expressed appreciation to the regional bloc for its support.

The donation follows the June 29, 2026 floods, which were triggered by hours of torrential rainfall and caused widespread devastation across parts of Accra and surrounding communities.

Homes, businesses, and public infrastructure were submerged, leaving thousands of residents displaced and causing significant damage to property.

The disaster also claimed lives, disrupted transport and economic activities, and prompted emergency rescue and relief operations by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the security services, and other humanitarian agencies.
