Jane Opoku-Agyemang rejects early 2028 NDC flagbearer speculation

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has refused to be drawn into speculation about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential nomination ahead of the 2028 general elections.

She said the immediate responsibility of the NDC government was to fulfil the mandate given to it by Ghanaians and address the challenges confronting the country, rather than focusing prematurely on the next election.

According to her, Ghanaians did not vote for the NDC to immediately begin positioning itself for the 2028 elections but entrusted the party with the responsibility of solving the country’s problems.

“They didn’t vote for us today to be turning about, going or not going. They said, ‘come and solve the problems’. We have an agenda. What we inherited was a very, very tough situation. We have work to do,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang warned that an early focus on who should lead the NDC in 2028 could distract the government from delivering on its promises and undermine the purpose for which it was elected.

“And it’s not even time for NDC flagbearer elections. I think it’s a betrayal of the cause of the people. And I don’t think it is right,” she stressed.

The Vice President therefore appealed to NDC members and supporters to remain focused on implementing the government’s programmes and policies instead of engaging in premature succession debates.

“So please help us to fulfil the dreams of this beautiful country that we know much better, even though it is doing now. Let us focus on getting the job done,” she appealed.

She said the administration’s success should ultimately be measured by the quality of work it delivers and the support it provides to Ghanaians, rather than by speculation about its political future.

“And it depends on the quality of support we are giving. If you’re already going left and right and centre and back,” she added.

This is in response to a question on KSM, the latest edition of The KSM Show, about whether she would consider contesting the NDC flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
