Police launch manhunt for man captured assaulting pastor after arrest

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a man captured assaulting a pastor shortly after the cleric was arrested over alleged offensive remarks about Prophet Mohammed.

A video circulating widely on social media shows the pastor being confronted and physically assaulted by a man believed to be a Muslim as he was being taken away following his arrest.

The incident has attracted public attention, with concerns raised over the use of violence against a suspect in police custody.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said it had commenced efforts to identify and arrest the assailant.

“The Ghana Police Service has commenced a manhunt for a man captured in a viral video assaulting a suspect,” the Service said.

The Police condemned the incident and said investigations were underway into the circumstances surrounding the assault.

It added that anyone found culpable would be taken through due process of the law.

The pastor was arrested after remarks he allegedly made about Prophet Mohammed sparked widespread reactions, particularly among Muslims.

The Police have urged the public not to take the law into their own hands, stressing that allegations must be dealt with through established legal processes.
