Update: 12 dead, several injured in Ofankor Barrier crash – NRSA confirms

Twelve people have died following a fatal road crash along the John Teye–Ofankor corridor in Accra on Thursday, August 13, 2026,

In a statement, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) said the crash involved seven vehicles, including two heavily loaded tipper trucks, two passenger Sprinter buses, two private saloon cars and one tricycle.

The Authority said several others were injured in the crash, with the victims conveyed to the Ga North Municipal Hospital and Achimota Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The NRSA said it is working with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders to manage the traffic situation and restore order along the corridor.

The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution and comply with road safety regulations.

The NRSA said, “This painful incident is a reminder of the urgent need for greater responsibility and vigilance on our roads.”**

The Authority also reminded motorists of the statutory speed limits, stating, “Motorists are reminded of the statutory speed limits: 90 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban settlements, and 30 km/h in built-up areas.”

It further urged vehicle owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained before travelling, warning that mechanical failures and excessive speeding remain major causes of road crashes.

“Mechanical failures, when combined with excessive speeding, continue to be major causes of crashes, and regular maintenance checks are essential to prevent avoidable tragedies.”

The NRSA described the incident as a painful reminder of the consequences of negligence and failure to comply with road safety regulations.

It extended its condolences to the bereaved families and transport associations affected by the crash and wished the injured a full and speedy recovery.
