Upper East Tour: Mahama commends NHIA Dr. Bampoe-led leadership

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe-led administration for their performance so far,
Speaking at the Resetting Ghana Citizens’ Engagement in Bolgatanga on August 14, President Mahama said: “I’m very proud of our people at the National Health Insurance Scheme.”
”They’ve done very well. And I want to commend the Minister of Finance for uncapping the National Health Insurance,” President Mahama said.
The President also praised the Finance Minister for the timely and consistent flow of funds to the health sector in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
”Not only uncapping it, but he is paying them their money on time. And that allows them to pay their healthcare facilities, reimburse them for services given,” he said.
He explained that the tariffs had not been reviewed in a long time, creating a gap between treatment costs and the amount reimbursed by the NHIS.
”But the good news is also that the health insurance has reviewed and increased the tariffs on the claims that the facilities are making. They haven’t been reviewed for a very long time,” he said.
”But the good news is also that the health insurance has reviewed and increased the tariffs on the claims that the facilities are making. They haven’t been reviewed for a very long time,” he added.
According to President Mahama, the low reimbursement rates had previously compelled some healthcare facilities to introduce co-payments, requiring patients to pay the difference when NHIS reimbursements did not cover the full cost of treatment.
”And so what some of the facilities were doing was they introduced what they call co-payment. So if the health facility, if the National Health Insurance reimbursement is not up to the cost of the treatment they gave you, they let you pay,” he explained.
President John Dramani Mahama undertook a two-day working visit and “Resetting Ghana” tour to the Upper East Region on August 13–14, 2026.
The tour focused on inspecting key infrastructure, commissioning public projects, expressing gratitude for 2024 election support, and engaging directly with local chiefs and residents.
