A 43-year-old soldier, WOII Dzisenu Ben, has been remanded into police custody by the Ashaiman District Court over the alleged murder of a 45-year-old man at Mawugbedzibe, near Afienya.
WOII Dzisenu, who is facing a charge of murder contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), did not have his plea taken when he appeared before the court.
The court, presided over by Derick Parden Eshun, ordered that he be kept in police custody and adjourned the case to August 27, 2026.
Prosecuting Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey told the court that the incident occurred on August 23, 2025, when WOII Dzisenu and another soldier, WOI Yamoah Mark, both stationed at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD), Michel Camp, went to the Afienya Police Station to report an incident at Mawugbedzibe.
According to the prosecution, the two soldiers reported that while they were at their landed property in the area, an unidentified man attacked WOII Dzisenu and attempted to disarm him of his M16 rifle.
Inspector Nartey said the soldier allegedly fired his rifle during the confrontation, hitting the man.
The prosecution said police officers subsequently accompanied the two soldiers to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the man, identified as Abdul Shaban, lying on the ground.
The deceased was found with a suspected gunshot wound to the upper chest, close to the neck.
He was later pronounced dead, after which his body was conveyed to the Tema General Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The court further heard that police retrieved the M16 rifle allegedly used in the incident. The weapon, identified by number 000470-11, together with its magazine and ammunition, was retained by the police as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
WOII Dzisenu is expected to reappear before the Ashaiman District Court on August 27, 2026, as investigations continue.
