Ahead of formal declaration: Opong-Fosu calls on NDC to reset, reconnect with grassroots

Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Opong-Fosu has called for a major renewal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), warning that the party must begin laying the foundation for 2028 while delivering on its current mandate
Opong-Fosu made the call when he engaged the NDC Western Region Caucus as part of consultations ahead of his formal declaration for the National Chairmanship race.
The engagement focused on the future direction of the party, strengthening its internal structures and ensuring that the NDC remains politically competitive beyond the current administration.
At the centre of his message was a call for “Restoration, Renewal and Resetting” of the party.
According to Opong-Fosu, the NDC must restore the values that have historically defined the party, renew the commitment of its members, and reset its structures and approach to meet the changing expectations of Ghanaians.
He also stressed the need to consolidate the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama, arguing that the gains of the current administration must provide a strong foundation for the party’s future.
While acknowledging the importance of delivering on the mandate given to the NDC by Ghanaians, he said the party must simultaneously strengthen its internal cohesion and reconnect with its grassroots.
He further underscored the importance of preparing strategically for 2028 and beyond, rather than waiting until the next election cycle before undertaking internal reforms.
Opong-Fosu said the NDC’s future must be anchored in “unity, discipline, institutional strength and a renewed commitment to the founding ideals of probity, accountability and social justice.”
He also advocated for a broad-based and inclusive party in which members at all levels, from the branches to national leadership, have a meaningful role in shaping its direction.
The Western Region engagement forms part of a wider consultation process involving key stakeholders across the NDC ahead of Hon. Opong-Fosu’s formal declaration.
He is expected to continue engagements with various groups and constituencies as he listens to concerns, gathers views, and presents his vision for the party’s future.
His central message was summed up in a call to “restore our values, renew our mindset, reset our Party, consolidate the Mahama legacy, and build an NDC that is ready for 2028 and generations beyond.”
