Banda killing: NPP candidate led mob attack during 2020 election violence – Muntaka

The Minister for the Interior has revealed that an NPP Parliamentary Candidate in the 2020 elections, Joe Danquah, led a mob attack on Moro Shimo, brother of the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Banda.

The Banda incident is among a number of election-related violence cases being investigated following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive on January 10, 2025, for thorough and impartial investigations into violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

The directive led to the establishment of a Special Investigation Task Force under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the cases and pursue those responsible.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, the Minister said the attack triggered a series of retaliatory clashes between youths from Banda Ahenkro and Kabronu, resulting in the death of Silas Wulochamey.

“Police investigations indicate that Joe Danquah, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the 2020 General Elections, led a mob to assault Moro Shimo, brother of the NDC MP,” he said.

“This triggered reprisal and counter-reprisal attacks by the youth of Banda Ahenkro and Kabronu, culminating in the murder of the deceased.”

Wulochamey was stabbed to death on July 13, 2020, during confrontations between NPP and NDC supporters amid the voter registration exercise.

The Minister said police investigations have identified several suspects in connection with the incident.

They include Danquah, Gabriel Yaw Agyei alias Abodie, Inusah alias Kapo, Kwasi Amos alias Olele, Kwaku Bio, Kwame Shilla, Kwabena Badu alias Last Two and Kwasi Dargarti.

Agyei has been identified as the prime suspect in the stabbing and killing of Wulochamey. He was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on March 11, 2026, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder.

He was subsequently granted bail by the Accra High Court on April 14, 2026. His next court hearing is scheduled for August 31, 2026.
