OSP receives petitions over Sammy Gyamfi’s ‘extortionist’ claims against Afenyo-Markin

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has been petitioned over alleged extortion claims made by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, against Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

This follows comments by Mr Gyamfi describing Mr Afenyo-Markin and persons associated with him as “devious extortionists” amid a public dispute over alleged US$1.7 billion losses linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

The controversy stems from questions raised by Mr Afenyo-Markin over the reported losses and GoldBod’s role in the programme, which Mr Gyamfi has rejected, insisting that GoldBod did not incur the alleged losses.

The dispute subsequently escalated, with Mr Gyamfi accusing the Minority Leader of pursuing a smear campaign against GoldBod and describing him as an “extortionist” during discussions on the matter.

In a public notice issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had received a joint petition from two persons, as well as two separate petitions from other individuals, in relation to the allegations.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has taken note of public allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” the notice stated.

“The OSP also acknowledges a joint petition submitted by two persons, as well as two separate petitions submitted by other persons, in relation to the allegations.”

According to the OSP, the petitions will be assessed to determine whether the matter falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the OSP will assess the case and determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted,” it stated.
