Western Region records three new HIV infections daily – Ghana AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed that more than 23,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in the Western Region, with at least three new infections recorded every day.

According to the Commission’s 2025 HIV estimates and projections released this year, the region continues to record new infections despite a slight decline in the overall rate.

Speaking to Channel One TV in Sekondi during an HIV/AIDS Stakeholders Review Meeting, Western Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Antonio Francis, said sustained efforts were needed to prevent new infections and accelerate progress towards ending AIDS in Ghana by 2030.

“Per the 2025 HIV estimates and projections which were done by the Ghana AIDS Commission and the report came out this year, we can say that for the Western Region, we have roughly 23,000 plus people that we estimate are living with the virus in the region,” he said.

Mr. Francis explained that although the number of new infections has declined slightly, the situation remains a concern.

“If you look at the rate of new infections, it has reduced slightly from somewhere around 992 persons newly infected with HIV,” he noted.

He added that the figures translate into approximately three new HIV infections being recorded in the region every day.

“What this means is that, if you should do a further breakdown, it means that every day we are getting at least three people getting infected in the region,” he said.

Mr. Francis cautioned that Ghana’s target of ending AIDS by 2030 could be undermined if efforts to prevent new infections are not intensified.

He stressed the need for a combination of effective HIV treatment and multiple prevention measures to reduce the rate of new infections and ensure that progress made in the fight against the disease is sustained.
