Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is a statesman, not a coward – Anatu Bogobiri Esq blasts NPP
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) in charge of Finance and Investment at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobiri Esq, has defended Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie against criticism over comments he made about Ghana’s governance record in the past eight years.
Madam Bogobiri made the remarks on Thursday, September 3, 2026, where she noted that, Chief Justice, as the head of one of the three arms of government, has the right to comment on issues of governance and how they affect the delivery of justice.
She argued that describing the Chief Justice’s remarks as partisan was misplaced, stressing that his reference to the “past eight years” should be understood as a factual period rather than a political attack against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“If a Chief Justice cannot state that in the past eight years Ghana went through a period of decline, then we are asking him to be vague, to be dishonest, to be a coward,” she said.
Madam Bogobiri maintained that a Chief Justice should be able to speak frankly about national issues without being pressured to tailor his views to satisfy political interests.
“A statesman does not speak vaguely to please politicians. He speaks factually to build the nation,” she said.
Her comments come amid controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, in which he compared the performance of some state institutions under the current administration with that of the previous government.
The remarks have attracted criticism from the NPP, which has called on the Chief Justice to retract what it considers partisan political comments or resign and formally join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, Madam Bogobiri rejected the suggestion that the Chief Justice’s reference to the past eight years amounted to an NPP versus NDC argument.
“Past eight years is not NPP vs NDC. It is 2017-2025,” she stated.
She stressed that the period referred to by the Chief Justice represents a measurable timeline that can be assessed based on national development and governance indicators.
“It is a factual timeline which is measurable,” she said.
Bogobiri further argued that facts should not be interpreted through partisan lenses, insisting that objective assessments of Ghana’s governance record should be allowed to inform national debate.
“And facts have no party colours,” she said.
