Ghana Water to resume Weija Dam spillage from September 9

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage from the Weija Dam on September 9, 2026, following rising water levels caused by heavy rainfall.

In a statement issued on September 6, GWL said the water level at the Weija Dam has reached 45.2 feet due to heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall within the Densu River catchment area and its tributaries.

The company explained that with the water level nearing the dam’s critical threshold of 46 feet, it has decided to undertake a controlled spillage as a precautionary measure to protect the integrity of the dam and prevent potential structural risks.

“GWL will resume spillage from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam,” the statement noted.

Residents living downstream of the dam have been advised to evacuate affected areas ahead of the planned spillage and remain vigilant throughout the period.

The utility provider urged residents to comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put their lives at risk.

The company further called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), district assemblies, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to activate emergency response measures and prepare communities that may be affected by the release of water.

According to GWL, communities expected to be impacted include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding settlements located along the downstream path of the dam.

The announcement comes amid concerns over the impact of seasonal rains on water bodies across the country, with authorities monitoring several flood-prone areas.

GWL assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve.

“The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” the statement said.

The company also urged residents in affected communities to heed all warnings and cooperate with emergency management agencies to ensure their safety before and during and after the spillage exercise.
