Tanzania’s First Gentleman dies while receiving treatment

Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment for heart complications.

Hassan died on the morning of Monday, September 7, 2026, according to Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death.

He had been receiving medical care after developing heart-related complications, although authorities have not disclosed further details about his condition or treatment.

Hassan was an agricultural academic who largely stayed away from the public spotlight during his wife’s political career.

He and President Samia had four children, comprising three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Mwanu Hafidh Ameir, is a politician and serves in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.

His death has triggered condolences from political leaders and institutions across Africa, with messages of support directed towards President Samia and her family.

Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with “deep sorrow” and extended his condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.

“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto said, adding that Kenya stood with Tanzania during the mourning period.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also expressed his condolences to the Tanzanian leader and her family.

“We convey our deepest condolences to Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan on the passing of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan,” Hichilema said.

The African Union Commission also expressed sympathy through its Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

Youssouf offered his “deepest condolences” to President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people, while praying for strength and comfort following the loss.

The AU Commission also prayed for the peaceful repose of Hassan’s soul and extended its sympathy to the bereaved family.

Hassan’s death comes as President Samia continues to lead Tanzania, having become the country’s first female president in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli.

Details about Hassan’s funeral arrangements and any official mourning period are yet to be announced by Tanzanian authorities.
