Afenyo-Markin speaks on attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP

‎Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Mahama to rein in his appointees following the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Accra High Court.

‎Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin urged President Mahama to reflect on his legacy and the remaining years of his administration.
‎
‎Addressing the President directly, the Minority Leader said: “Mr. President, reflect on your legacy. You are left with almost just two years. You are just two years from exiting office.”
‎
‎He questioned whether the President would be able to look back on his second term and conclude that he had used the opportunity to transform the country.
‎
‎“Can you proudly say the second opportunity you were given by God, you really used that second chance, which is rare, to transform your country?” he asked.
‎
‎His comments come after the Manhyia South MP said he drove away from the premises of the Accra High Court after an official of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) allegedly attempted to take him into custody.
‎
Mr. ‎Afenyo-Markin called on President Mahama to address what he described as excesses by state officials.
‎
‎“Mr. President, watch these excesses. Watch these excesses. Enough. Bring your appointees to order. Call them to order. This is not the Ghana we want, Mr. President,” he said.
‎
‎The Minority Leader stressed that the opposition was not opposed to accountability or the lawful operations of state institutions.
‎
‎“We are not against accountability. We always say that. We are not against any state institution going about its lawful duty as enshrined in any enactment or the constitution,” he stated.
‎
‎However, he insisted that state institutions must operate within the law.
‎“But what we are saying is that a state institution must be seen to be doing its work lawfully,” he added.
‎
‎Afenyo-Markin also criticised EOCO, referring to it as “Yoko,” and accused the institution of gaining notoriety for allegedly abusing its mandate.
‎
‎“EOCO has gained notoriety for abusing its mandate. We all know it. But it appears that Yoko is untouchable,” he said.
‎
‎He warned President Mahama that the actions of state institutions under his administration would ultimately form part of his legacy.
‎
‎“But Mr. President, in the end, it will be your record. Today, it is bad for the world. It is bad for tomorrow. You may not be in office, and it may be somebody close to you,” Mr Afenyo-Markin cautioned.
