Manhyia South MP explains High Court exit

‎The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has explained why he drove away from the premises of the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following a confrontation involving individuals he identified as officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

‎According to the MP, he feared he was being forcibly taken away after a female officer allegedly failed to produce evidence confirming her identity or an arrest warrant.
‎
‎“I told her go, I will follow you, then she said, no, she would forcibly take me into their vehicle. At that point, she couldn’t produce any evidence that she was indeed from EOCO. I also wanted to know whether she has the arrest warrant. She also couldn’t produce anything,” Mr Baffour Awuah said.
‎
‎He said the circumstances led him to believe that he could be the target of a kidnapping attempt, prompting him to take steps to protect himself.
‎
‎“It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been happening. It is true. I had to defend and protect myself for the benefit of good people of Manhyia South, my children and my whole family,” he narrated.
‎
‎The MP, who is also legal counsel for detained senior nursing officer Salomey Baffoe Awiti, said he needed to ensure his safety so he could continue representing his client and protect her interests.
‎
‎“I needed to put myself at a place where I’ll be safe so that I could also protect and defend the interest of my client for the benefit of her children, particularly the four-year-old who is waiting for the release of her mother. And that is why I had to drive to safety,” he said.

‎Mr Baffour Awuah subsequently drove to Parliament, where he said he was scheduled to undertake committee work.
‎
‎“I’ve come to parliament, colleagues are behind me, and I thank them very much. So from there, I had to drive to parliament because I was also required to do committee work in parliament,” he added.
‎
‎He further alleged that the incident occurred while he was on his way to Parliament.
‎
‎“And so, she attempted to kidnap me whilst I was on my way to parliament,” Mr Baffour Awuah narrated at a press briefing in Parliament shortly after the incident.

‎High-drama scenes unfolded at the Accra High Court Complex on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as security personnel reportedly from EOCO clashed with lawyers and supporters of Salomey Baffoe Awiti.
‎
‎The confrontation reportedly centered on the Manhyia South MP and his role as legal counsel for the accused, leading to a physical altercation and a tense vehicle pursuit outside the court premises.
‎
‎Videos circulating online showed a female security officer attempting to prevent the MP from leaving in his vehicle. Heated exchanges followed, with a scuffle subsequently breaking out between security personnel and members of the legal team.

‎The incident has since attracted public attention, with questions surrounding the circumstances that led to the confrontation and the actions of the individuals involved.
