Mahama pardons 863 convicted persons to mark Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary

President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities commemorating Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
In a press release issued on Monday, October 5, 2026, by the Presidency Communications, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the President was said to have exercised the prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultation with the Council of State.
The release stated that the pardon was granted as an act of mercy and national reflection, noting that it was intended to mark the significant milestone in Ghana’s history.
“The grant of pardon is made in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, marking this significant milestone in the nation’s history with an act of mercy and national reflection,” the statement said.
According to the release, the beneficiaries include 819 first offenders, who will receive outright release, while 13 very old persons aged 70 years and above will also be granted outright release.
Additionally, 11 death sentences will be commuted to life sentences, while six seriously ill prisoners will receive outright release. Another six persons serving life sentences will have their sentences commuted to 20 years definite.
The remaining beneficiaries include 25 persons under special recommendation, three petitioners and three others, bringing the total number of pardoned convicted persons to 863.
The relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision.
