GoldBod backs Pete Edochie’s African youth mentorship initiative

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has pledged its support for veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie’s African Youth Mentorship Initiative, a programme aimed at inspiring, mentoring and developing the talents of young people across the continent.
The commitment was made when Edochie paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, at the Board’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The mentorship initiative forms part of Edochie’s broader African Legacy Project, which includes a new book, a documentary film and a youth development programme targeting about 500,000 young Africans.
Mr. Gyamfi said the initiative fits into GoldBod’s existing Special Intervention Projects (SIP), particularly its focus on mentorship, skills development and entrepreneurship.
“We count ourselves in. We’ll be part and parcel of this inspiring project because we have the youth at heart,” Gyamfi stated.
He commended Edochie for using his decades of experience in the entertainment industry to mentor and inspire young Africans, noting that the initiative goes beyond entertainment to address personal development, leadership and the future of the continent.
A significant revelation during the meeting was that GoldBod and its activities are featured in Edochie’s new book.
Lawyer Gyamfi said he was surprised and honoured by the inclusion, describing it as a reflection of the actor’s growing interest in Africa’s economic development and the responsible management of the continent’s natural resources.
He said Edochie’s advocacy demonstrates that his contribution to Africa extends beyond his long-standing career in film, particularly through his call for Africans to exercise greater control over the continent’s mineral resources.
Gyamfi also used the meeting to outline government’s efforts to transform Ghana’s gold sector since the establishment of GoldBod in October 2025.
According to him, Ghana repatriated US$10.8 billion from gold in 2025, while the cedi appreciated by 41 per cent against the US dollar during the same period.
He further said Ghana ended the year with 5.7 months of import cover, while inflation declined from 23.3 per cent to about five per cent.
Mr. Gyamfi attributed the developments partly to measures designed to give Ghana greater control over the trading and management of its gold resources and ensure that the proceeds from the country’s mineral wealth contribute meaningfully to national development.
The engagement between GoldBod and Edochie brings together three key areas: African cultural heritage, youth empowerment and economic sovereignty.
While Edochie’s African Legacy Project seeks to transform his decades of experience into a platform for shaping the next generation, GoldBod’s support provides an opportunity to strengthen its youth-focused interventions and contribute to a broader conversation on Africa’s development.
The collaboration therefore signals a shared commitment to equipping young Africans with mentorship and knowledge while encouraging them to appreciate the continent’s cultural heritage, economic potential and responsibility for its future.
