Education Ministry commends teacher unions for suspending strike

The Ministry of Education has commended three teacher unions for suspending their nationwide strike on October 9, 2026, following constructive negotiations with the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
The unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, the Ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the unions for suspending the industrial action, describing the decision as a positive step towards resolving their outstanding concerns.
“The Ministry acknowledges the unions’ decision as a positive step towards resolving outstanding concerns through dialogue, mutual understanding, and constructive engagement in the best interest of teachers and learners,” the statement said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the three unions, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other relevant stakeholders to address the outstanding issues and promote teachers’ welfare.
According to the statement, the engagement would also help ensure stability and continuity in the delivery of quality education.
The Ministry further acknowledged the patience and resilience of teachers, parents, learners and other stakeholders affected by the industrial action.
It urged all parties to maintain the spirit of cooperation and good faith to ensure that the progress made through negotiations is sustained.

They further reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening industrial harmony and creating an enabling environment in which teachers are valued, supported and empowered to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s education transformation agenda.
The Ministry maintained that, teachers’ welfare remained an important part of efforts to improve the education sector and called for continued cooperation among all relevant stakeholders.
