Afi Agbenyo deserves EC chairperson role – Tanko Computer

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has defended the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), arguing that she possesses the qualifications to occupy an even higher position at the commission
Speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Monday, he warned that appointing individuals perceived to have strong political affiliations could undermine public confidence in the electoral management body.
”She is even supposed to be the Commissioner but not a Deputy because she is very much qualified,” he said.
”The people we need are people above board and not people that are partisan. If it is the case that [Emelia Afi Agbenyo] is an NDC sympathiser or faithful, then we have a problem on our hands,” Dr Asah-Asante said.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has charged the two newly appointed Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission, Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, to discharge their responsibilities fairly and without favouring any political party.
During their swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, the President emphasised that their primary responsibility was to the people of Ghana and urged them to safeguard the credibility of the country’s electoral process.
”The duty is to the people of Ghana and its people, discharge your duty without favouring any candidate or party. I expect no preferential treatment for myself, my govt and party,” President Mahama said.
He further urged the new appointees to draw on their professional experience to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian could participate in elections and that every valid vote reflected the will of the electorate.
Agbenyo previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, while Asamoah, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), formerly held several senior positions at the Electoral Commission, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.
Their appointments fill vacancies created by the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.
Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana. Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, retired upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
The appointments come at a time when the Electoral Commission faces renewed public and political scrutiny over the impartiality of its leadership and the need to maintain confidence in Ghana’s electoral system.
