Deadly attack at Nalerigu SHS leaves two students dead

Two students of Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region have been shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in a horrifying early-morning attack. The incident has left the school and the surrounding community reeling in fear and grief.

The shooting occurred on the school premises in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, under circumstances that remain murky. According to school authorities, the attackers entered the school’s compound and opened fire, killing two male students. The motive for the attack is still unknown.

Headmaster of the school, Mr. Mohammed Tibila, confirmed the incident in an interview, saying, “Yes, the students were indeed killed here.” He expressed shock over the incident, describing it as “an unimaginable tragedy that has left the entire school shaken.”

The victims’ names have not yet been disclosed, as police work to inform their families. The bodies of the deceased have since been transported to a morgue under police supervision, while forensic teams combed the scene for evidence on Saturday and Sunday.

Eyewitnesses report that gunshots rang out around dawn, sending students scrambling for safety. Some locked themselves inside their dormitories, while others fled to nearby homes and facilities for refuge. As of Sunday morning, teaching and learning have come to a halt, with many students and staff traumatised to resume normal activities.

“This is the first time something like this has happened here,” said a teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Everyone is terrified. No one feels safe.”

Though the North East Regional Police Command confirmed the shooting, officials have remained tight-lipped on details, citing the sensitivity of the investigation. However, police presence on campus and in surrounding communities has since been intensified.
