Lilwin expresses disappointment as Lumba vigil falls on same day as movie premiere

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, has expressed disappointment over the timing of a vigil scheduled in honour of the late highlife legend, Charles Kojo Fosu, known widely as Daddy Lumba.
The vigil, which will take place on Saturday, August 2, is expected to draw thousands of mourners as family, friends, and fans come together to pay their respects. However, the date coincides with the premiere of Lilwin’s much-anticipated film, “A Country Called Ghana,” also slated for August 2 in Kumasi.
In an interview, Lilwin said while he deeply respects Daddy Lumba’s legacy and sympathises with the bereaved family, he was taken aback by the decision to hold such a major event on the same day as his movie premiere.
“I was really surprised when I heard the date. Daddy Lumba is someone we all look up to and admire, but I think more consideration should have been given to other events happening within the industry,” he said.
Lilwin noted that his premiere date had been announced months ago, and extensive preparations had gone into promoting it. He fears the clash could affect turnout, as both events are likely to attract large audiences.
“We’ve worked so hard on this project, and it’s not just about me; it’s about pushing the film industry forward. I hope people can find a way to support both events,” he added.
Despite his disappointment, the actor says he has no intention of postponing the film premiere. He extended his condolences to the family of the late musician and said he understands the significance of the vigil.
Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most iconic musicians, died on July 26 after a short illness. His contribution to the Ghanaian music industry spans over three decades, with a legacy built on timeless highlife hits and musical innovation. His passing has been met with widespread grief and tributes from fans, musicians, and public figures across the country.
