Your stances on our pricing ‘regrettable’ – DStv to Sam George

MultiChoice Ghana has expressed disappointment over recent comments by the Minister for Communications, Digitalisation and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, regarding DStv pricing in Ghana.
MultiChoice emphasized its commitment to constructive dialogue and continued service to the Ghanaian people.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, August 3, MultiChoice said it had engaged the Minister in good faith and was surprised by his recent stance. The company confirmed that it had submitted proposals to the Ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) for further discussions on pricing concerns.
“It is regrettable that the Honourable Minister has taken this stance. We have submitted a proposal to both the Minister and the NCA for an alternative channel of engagement,” the statement signed by Managing Director Alex Okyere read.
The company also reaffirmed its nearly three-decade presence in Ghana and contributions to job creation, content development, and local business support, adding that it remains sensitive to affordability concerns while maintaining service quality.
“It is also relevant that, whilst the Ghanaian Cedi has recently appreciated, in our view the current environment does not support a reduction in fees of the order of magnitude that the Minister appears to expect, without compromising on service quality,” it noted.
This comes in response to remarks made by the Minister on Friday, August 1, during the Government Accountability Series. Hon. George revealed that he had formally instructed the NCA to initiate suspension processes against DSTV should the company fail to review its pricing by August 7.
“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended,” the Minister stated.
According to Mr. George, DSTV’s justification for its current pricing—based on claims that the Ghanaian cedi had depreciated by over 200% in the last eight years—was not convincing. He insisted that Ghanaians had endured unfair billing practices for too long.
“My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that,” he declared.
MultiChoice reiterated its respect for Ghana’s laws and called for continued dialogue. “We remain committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in Ghana, and trust that the authorities will do likewise,” the statement concluded.
