Farmers demand an apology from GRNMA General Secretary over ‘derogatory’ remarks 

The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has criticized Dr. David Tenkorang Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), over remarks it described as “derogatory, disrespectful, and unacceptable.”

The association has demanded an unqualified apology within 24 hours, warning of further action if he fails to retract his comments.

Dr. Tenkorang Twum, during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, allegedly launched verbal attacks on both the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Ghanaian farmers. He reportedly suggested that Mr. Akandoh’s experience as a farmer left him ill-prepared for the complexities of managing the country’s health sector.

In a statement issued by GNAFF, the association expressed deep shock and dismay, calling the remarks unwarranted and disrespectful. GNAFF noted that such comments undermine the dignity of farmers, who remain a vital backbone of Ghana’s economy by contributing immensely to food security, economic survival, and national development.

“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security, and economic survival. It is therefore highly disheartening, discourteous, and unacceptable for such a venerable group to be subjected to public ridicule in this manner,” the statement read.

GNAFF has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Dr. Tenkorang Twum to retract his statements and offer an unqualified apology to farmers and fishermen across the country. The association also warned that failure to do so would compel them to take “appropriate steps necessary to defend the dignity and integrity” of their members.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has responded, describing the criticisms as misplaced and unnecessary. He stressed that his leadership at the ministry should not be judged by his professional background but rather by his commitment to addressing pressing challenges within Ghana’s health system.

“I am a proud farmer, and everybody knows it,” Mr. Akandoh stated.
