MoH postpones nursing and midwifery licensing

The Ministry of Health has postponed the Centralised Licensing Examinations for nursing and midwifery candidates to September 4, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 22, and signed by the Ministry’s Deputy Director and Spokesperson, Tony Goodman, the decision followed a consultative meeting between the Minister of Health, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHETI).
The examinations, originally planned for this month, will now be conducted in the respective training institutions instead of designated centralised centres. According to the statement, this change is intended to ensure smooth participation and closer supervision by the NMC, while avoiding the risks and inconveniences associated with long-distance travel by students.
“The directive follows careful consideration of the risks associated with extensive travel by students to designated examination centres,” the release explained. It further noted that the measure is necessary to safeguard the safety and well-being of candidates, while ensuring fairness and proper monitoring of the process.
Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stressed that it was not appropriate for students to travel from one region to another just to sit for examinations. He assured stakeholders that the Ministry will provide the necessary logistics to support the successful implementation of the directive.
The Ministry also announced that a revised timetable and detailed guidelines would be issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in due course. It expressed appreciation to candidates, training institutions, and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the adjustment.
“This measure is not only about protecting the safety of students but also about ensuring fairness and effective supervision,” the statement added.
The postponement comes at at period in health sector when thousands of nursing and midwifery candidates prepare to obtain their professional licenses.
Stakeholders are now awaiting the release of the new examination timetable and guidelines, which will provide clarity on the way forward.
