African Electoral Institute holds strategic meeting in Accra

The African Electoral Institute (AEI) has held a strategic meeting at its head office on 29th August, 2026, held at Darkuman in the Greater Accra region.

The meeting brought together the leadership and departmental heads of the Institute to review its operations, assess current challenges, and develop strategies for future operations.

A key item on the agenda was the exploration of the Institute’s potential role in monitoring and observing the 2027 general elections in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The management deliberated on logistical, technical, and partnership requirements needed to deploy a credible observer mission.

Speaking after the meeting, Director for Electoral Collation Mr. Augustus Eshun, noted that AEI remains committed to deepening electoral integrity across Africa.

> “This strategic meeting is part of our continuous effort to strengthen the Institute. We reviewed what we have done well, where we faced challenges, and how we can better serve Africa’s democracy. The possibility of observing the 2027 Nigerian general elections is an important step that will require diligence and collaboration with stakeholders,” he said.

The Head of the Electoral Security Department, Ex WO1 Alhaji Yussif Mahamah, added that security of elections remains a priority in AEI’s observation framework.

The Institute also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, political parties, security agencies, and civil society organizations to promote free, fair, and transparent elections in Ghana and across the continent.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment to professionalism, due diligence, and strict quality control in all of AEI’s research and electoral monitoring activities.
