Anthony Joshua survives deadly car crash in Nigeria

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua survived a deadly car crash on Nigeria’s Ogun–Lagos expressway on Monday, an incident that left two people dead and several others injured.
Local police confirmed to local media that Joshua was taken to the hospital alongside other injured passengers following the collision, which occurred earlier in the day on the busy highway linking Ogun State to Lagos.
Authorities initially said the former world champion sustained minor injuries and was “fine,” but further medical assessments were ongoing.
According to preliminary accounts from local media, Joshua was seated in the back of a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on the expressway.
The circumstances surrounding why the truck was parked on the road, and whether warning signs were in place, remain unclear.
A police official told local media that emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, adding that officers were proceeding to a nearby hospital to establish the full number of casualties. “He has been taken to hospital with others who were injured,” the official said, referring to Joshua. “At the time of our first briefing, we were informed he was fine, but we are still gathering details.”
Images circulating on social media appear to show Joshua sitting topless at the back of a damaged vehicle, surrounded by what looks like shattered glass.
The BBC says it is working to verify the authenticity and context of the photographs, which have been widely shared online since news of the crash broke.
What remains unknown are the identities of the two people who died and which vehicle they were travelling in at the time of the collision.
Police have also not confirmed the precise cause of the crash or provided a definitive account of how many others sustained injuries.
Joshua, 36, has strong family ties to Nigeria, with roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State.
He has frequently spoken about his connection to the country and has visited on several occasions.
As investigations continue, authorities say they will release more information once hospital reports and eyewitness accounts are reviewed.
Fans and members of the boxing community worldwide have taken to social media to express relief at Joshua’s survival and to offer condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
