Ghana will on October 28, 2025, mark 60 years since the adoption of the Cedi as the country’s national currency, with a major celebration in Accra.
Themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”, the event will be graced by President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.
The anniversary seeks to reflect on the Cedi’s six-decade journey as a key symbol of national pride and economic independence, while also engaging Ghanaians on its evolution, policy relevance, and the importance of protecting the integrity of the local currency.
The introduction of the Cedi on July 19, 1965, represented a major step in Ghana’s economic self-determination following independence. “Since its inception, the Cedi has served not just as a medium of exchange but as a reflection of our national resilience and sovereignty.”
The Cedi@60 commemoration will feature a range of activities aimed at deepening public awareness and participation.
These include a National Launch Ceremony, a Cedi Van Regional Roadshow across the 16 regions, and a *Currency Conference* that will bring together experts from central banks, academia, and the private sector to discuss monetary policy and stability.
There will also be youth-focused competitions in music, art, essays, and quizzes to promote financial literacy and appreciation of the Cedi’s history among students. Additionally, the Bank will intensify its *Clean Note Campaign* to educate citizens on proper currency handling and the identification of security features.
“The Cedi@60 anniversary offers us a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come, but also to reaffirm our commitment to building a stable, robust, and respected national currency.”
The milestone will serve not just as a commemoration of the past, but as a platform to inspire confidence in Ghana’s financial future.
It could not have come at a better when the cedi appears to be making significant gains against the United States dollar.
