‘Garlus, well done’ – Mahama applauds GWCL MD over works

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, for his role in advancing the Damongo Water Project.
The praise came during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association (GLYA) held in Buipe, where the President joined traditional leaders, youth groups, and government officials to mark the milestone. The annual Easter gathering serves as a platform for indigenes to reflect on development priorities and strengthen unity within the area.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama highlighted the importance of access to potable water, describing it as a fundamental necessity for development. He noted that efforts to resolve the long-standing water challenges in Damongo had reached a significant stage, largely due to the groundwork undertaken by the Ghana Water Limited MD.
“Regarding access to safe water, we know it is a right, not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done; we did not send him to the Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the legwork, and I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister for Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System to start. Garlus, well done, thank you very much,” President Mahama said.
The announcement was welcomed by residents, as the Damongo Water Project has remained a major concern in the area for years, with communities relying on limited and unreliable water sources.
Since taking office in January 2025, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu has introduced reforms aimed at improving the performance of Ghana Water Limited. His administration has focused on strengthening financial systems, enhancing operational efficiency, and expanding water supply infrastructure across the country.
Key projects currently under development include the Damongo, Tamale, and Yendi water supply systems, all aligned with government’s broader objective of increasing access to safe drinking water under Sustainable Development Goal Six.
As part of the Damongo project, preliminary steps such as documentation, inter-agency coordination, and engagement with the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing have been completed. These efforts culminated in the signing of a financial commitment by the Minister for Finance on March 31, 2026, paving the way for procurement and eventual construction works.
The President’s remarks underscore growing confidence in the project, with stakeholders hopeful that the next phase will deliver lasting relief to communities affected by persistent water shortages in the Savannah Region.
