Ghanaian death toll in Burkina Faso terrorist attack rises to eight

Eight Ghanaians have now been confirmed dead following the February 14 terrorist attack in Titao, Burkina Faso, prompting President John Dramani Mahama to order the immediate airlift of injured victims.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a press release that “the recent jihadist attack of 14th February, 2026 in Titao, in the northern province of Burkina Faso has now claimed eight Ghanaian lives.”
Initially, seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association were confirmed dead after they were ambushed while engaged in lawful trading activities.
The Ministry explained that “seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association who were engaged in lawful trading activities in the Titao area were attacked and killed by the terrorists.”
The latest fatality, according to the statement, was among four compatriots who had sustained serious injuries.
“The latest victim, also a member of the Association, was one of four compatriots who sustained serious injuries and were receiving medical treatment before succumbing,” the statement added.
The victims were innocent civilians, tomato traders and transporters travelling in a truck to northern Burkina Faso to purchase produce for the Ghanaian market when they were ambushed.
President Mahama has since directed urgent intervention measures. The Ministry stated: “On the instructions of President Mahama and with competent medical consultations, the Government of Ghana has decided to immediately conduct medical evacuation by air of all Ghanaian victims in Burkina Faso.”
It added that “the Ghana Airforce is carrying out the medevac,” with the injured expected in Ghana.
The government conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, noting that “President John Mahama and the Government of Ghana convey profound commiserations to the families and loved ones of all who have lost their lives.”
Condemning the attack, the statement said, “The Government of Ghana strongly condemns this mindless act of terror and expresses its solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso in this dark hour.”
