‘I thank you all’ — Omane Boamah’s mother at AI training centre launch

Grief mixed with gratitude as the mother of late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, acknowledged the support she has received since her son’s passing.
Madam Leticia spoke at Obomeng in the Eastern Region during the unveiling of the Dr Edward Omane Boamah Artificial Intelligence Training Facility, a project established to honour his legacy and promote digital skills among young people. The event brought together top government officials, traditional authorities, and players in the technology sector.
The facility is expected to contribute significantly to youth development by equipping beneficiaries with modern technological skills, while also helping to bridge Ghana’s digital gap. It reflects the late minister’s commitment to innovation and his vision for preparing the next generation for future opportunities.
Sharing her emotions with journalists, Madam Leticia described the period following her son’s death as deeply challenging, though she expressed appreciation for the recognition being given to his life and service. “I am glad. Since we lost him, a lot of people have been of help. They have honoured him. I thank you all. I thank the President. I know the Lord will console me because it is really tough.”
She also reflected on her son’s journey, noting his dedication to national service. “He was my only son who was a medical doctor and ventured into politics because of the love for his country Ghana. Thank you Ghana for showing up and honouring my son,” she said.
The ceremony was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who led a high-profile delegation that included former colleagues of the late minister and stakeholders from Ghana’s growing technology industry. The gathering underscored both national mourning and a shared commitment to sustaining his vision.
Dr. Omane Boamah died on August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crashed during an official assignment. The aircraft, travelling from Accra to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation, went down in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board, including senior government officials and military personnel. The incident was widely described as a national tragedy.
The launch of the artificial intelligence training centre stands as a lasting memorial, ensuring that his legacy lives on through initiatives that empower young people and advance Ghana’s technological development.
