Israel apologizes to Qatar over Hamas strike on home soil

Israel has formally apologized to Qatar after a missile strike targeting Hamas inadvertently killed a Qatari serviceman, straining ties between the two nations.
The apology came during a trilateral phone call on Monday hosted by former U.S. President Donald J. Trump with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The call, according to a White House readout, aimed to reset Israeli–Qatari relations after years of grievances and miscommunication.
Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed regret over the incident. “In targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty,” he admitted, assuring that “Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future.”
The strike, carried out earlier this month, was part of Israel’s ongoing campaign against Hamas following its infiltration attempts and rocket fire in the Gaza conflict.
However, one of the missiles landed on Qatari soil, leading to the death of a serviceman and drawing sharp criticism from Doha.
The event risked escalating tensions between Israel and Qatar, which has historically played a role as a mediator in regional disputes.
Prime Minister Al Thani welcomed Israel’s assurances but emphasized the need for accountability. He noted Qatar’s “readiness to continue contributing meaningfully to regional security and stability,” while insisting on greater respect for sovereignty going forward.
President Trump praised both leaders for agreeing to establish a trilateral coordination mechanism. According to the readout, this framework will “enhance communication, resolve grievances, and strengthen collective efforts to prevent threats.”
“The leaders underscored their shared commitment to working together constructively and clearing away misperceptions,” the statement added, highlighting the importance of building on longstanding ties with Washington.
The three leaders also discussed the war in Gaza, prospects for ending hostilities, and the need for greater understanding in the Middle East.
Trump lauded their willingness “to take steps toward greater cooperation in the interest of peace and security for all.”
This exchange marks a rare instance of direct dialogue between Israel and Qatar, with Washington positioning itself as mediator to stabilize fragile regional dynamics.
