Kusaug Traditional Council petitions for creation of new region

The Kusaug Traditional Council, led by the Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has formally petitioned the government for the creation of a new region to serve the Kusal Traditional Area.
A delegation representing the Bawku Naba on Friday presented the petition to the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, at his office. The delegation was made up of Alhaji Azonko Mahamudu, Chief of the Gumbo Divisional Area; Alhaji Osman Kasim, Chief in Charge of Environment; and Mr. John Abugre, a member of the Kusaug Advisory Council.
Alhaji Azonko Mahamudu, who led the delegation, expressed optimism that the request would receive favourable attention from the President.
“It is our hope that the petition will reach the President of the Republic of Ghana for consideration and necessary action,” he said.
Kusaug, located in the eastern corridor of the Upper East Region, borders Burkina Faso and Togo and consists of six administrative districts and constituencies, Bawku Central, Bawku West, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, and Tempane, with a combined population of about 579,626. The area is rich in culture and tradition, noted for crafts such as basket weaving, pottery, and beadwork, which provide livelihoods for many artisans. It also boasts scenic landscapes, including savannah plains, valleys, and rivers, as well as historical and cultural heritage sites such as the Zugraan Palace, Abakanga Valley, Agole Valley, Tili Forest, the White Volta, and Tambe Dam.
Receiving the petition, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga commended the delegation for the peaceful and orderly manner in which they presented their request. He assured them that their petition would be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama for prompt consideration.
“We will promptly submit the document to the President. It is our fervent hope that His Excellency John Mahama will listen to your request,” the Minister said.
Hon. Atanga emphasized that the creation of new regions is an administrative measure aimed at improving development outcomes. He noted that establishing a new region for the Kusaug area could help unlock its vast potential, promote equitable growth, and improve the livelihoods of its people.
