Lumba’s first wife seeks injunction on funeral over being ‘sidelined’

The funeral of Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has been thrown into uncertainty after his first wife, Mrs. Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, and her children filed a court injunction to stop all preparations.
According to a statement issued by the family, the legal widow took the decision after discovering that the funeral date had been publicised on social media without her consent or that of her children.
“We were deeply distressed to learn of the funeral date from social media,” the statement read, accusing the Abusuapanyin, Kofi Wusu, and members of the funeral committee of “acting in their own interests” and showing “a complete lack of respect” to the legal family.
Mrs. Fosuh’s family insists they have been “consistently sidelined” in discussions on how to honour the late musician, describing it as “a deliberate effort to marginalise” her since Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26 in Accra.
“The actions of the committee are unacceptable and contrary to both cultural and moral principles,” the statement added, urging fans and the public to disregard any unauthorised funeral announcements until the matter is settled.
The widow’s family emphasised that their goal is not to obstruct the funeral but to ensure that proper dialogue takes place among all parties to give the late musician a fitting farewell.
“We want a respectful and dignified farewell for Daddy Lumba, not confusion and disrespect,” they said.
The injunction plea , now before the court, effectively seeks to suspends all publicised funeral arrangements until a resolution is reached between the factions of the family.
The dispute has cast a shadow over plans to honour one of Ghana’s most adored Highlife icons, whose music shaped generations and remains a staple in the nation’s cultural memory.
This comes after the date of the famed musician’s funeral rites was scheduled to take place on 6th December, 2025 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
According to the committe overseeing the funeral preparations, the body will be transported from Accra to Kumasi via road from Accra to Kumasi.
The road procession, organizers believe, will afford well-wishers who would not be able to make in-person to the funeral grounds, the opportunity to pay their final respects to the late Daddy Lumba.
The national hitmaker died on 26th July, 2025 after a brief illness. He was 60 years old.
Lumba’s over three decades at the pinnacle of Ghana music saw him produce thrilling tracks that ranged from topics of sorrows, loss, pain, love and money.
He was also a political song hitmaker producing the never-to-be-forgotten ‘Nana ye Winner’ which former President Akufo Addo himself has attributed to this personal political success.
It remains to be seen how the quest to suspend the highly anticipated event will turn out.
