NHIA disburses GH¢382.85m to healthcare providers, assures timely payments

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed GH¢382.85 million in claims to healthcare providers across Ghana, covering services provided to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) members in September.
The latest payment brings the Authority’s cumulative claims payments for the year to GH¢2.115 billion, as the NHIA steps up efforts to ensure healthcare facilities are reimbursed promptly.
The September disbursement was shared among public, private and mission healthcare facilities. Public facilities received GH¢197.32 million, representing 51.54 per cent of the total, while private providers received GH¢128.95 million, or 33.68 per cent. Mission facilities received GH¢56.58 million, accounting for 14.78 per cent.
The NHIA said the payment is intended to enable healthcare providers to continue delivering services without interruption.
Commenting on the latest disbursement, NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to paying claims to accredited healthcare providers promptly.
He said timely reimbursement was important to sustaining confidence among both healthcare providers and NHIS members while supporting uninterrupted service delivery.
According to the statement, Dr Bampoe also said the NHIA’s priority is to ensure that NHIS members can access healthcare without financial barriers at the point of care.
He stressed that prompt claims payments should discourage facilities from charging NHIS members for services already covered under the Scheme.
“Prompt claims payment remains central to the Authority’s operational reforms, and the objective is to prevent co-payment at the point of care,” he stated.
The NHIA, for its part, said the latest payment reaffirms its commitment to “the timely reimbursement of facilities under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).”
It further said the disbursement demonstrates its resolve to ensure healthcare providers “receive prompt reimbursement” and “can continue delivering uninterrupted, quality healthcare services to members.”
The Authority also maintains that “timely claims settlement remains a key pillar of its operational reforms” and is critical to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring access to essential health services nationwide.
The latest payment comes after the NHIA increased service tariffs by 50 per cent in August as part of measures to support healthcare providers and sustain quality service delivery.
According to NHIA, the adjustment was intended to cushion service providers while strengthening efforts to remove financial barriers to healthcare access for NHIS members.
