Police officer jailed for life over murder of girlfriend in Kumasi

A Kumasi High Court has sentenced a police officer with the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit to life imprisonment. This was after he was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend in cold blood at Adum, in the Ashanti Regional capital.
The convicted officer, Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as Tycoon, was found guilty by a 5-2 jury decision on Friday, October 24, 2025, following months of trial over the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, also called Maadwoa.
Inspector Twumasi, who had earlier pleaded not guilty when the case opened on July 26, 2023, was accused of shooting his lover multiple times in the abdomen and chest at close range on April 20, 2023, around 9:50 p.m. near Adum in Kumasi. The incident, which shocked residents and sparked national outrage, claimed the life of the young mother of one.
According to the prosecution, the victim’s uncle lodged a complaint with the police immediately after the attack, and the wounded woman was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A police operation was quickly launched, leading to the arrest of the accused at Sekyere, near Effiduase, in the Ashanti Region on April 23, 2023—three days after the crime. Investigators later presented ballistic evidence and witness testimonies linking him directly to the shooting.
The jury’s verdict brought to an end a case that had drawn significant public attention and renewed calls for police accountability. The court’s decision means that Inspector Twumasi will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Friends and relatives of the late Maadwoa have described her as ambitious, kind-hearted, and full of promise. For them, the conviction, though painful, offers a measure of justice.
