Position UPSA as institution of excellence – Haruna to UPSA Council

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has charged the Governing Council of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), to position the institution as a center of excellence.
Dr. Harry Kwekwa Iguanu and other members of the council were sworn in during a ceremony where the Minister conveyed President Mahama’s congratulations and best wishes to the council.
“Position UPSA as an institution of excellence and impact,” Haruna Iddrisu advised the council, emphasizing the need for the university to produce graduates who can drive Ghana’s development agenda. He noted that the institution’s role in fostering a culture of ethical leadership and providing globally relevant programs is crucial in addressing the country’s manpower needs.
The Minister commended the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) for its principled stance against galamsey, a national issue that threatens the country’s water bodies and livelihoods. “Don’t give up and don’t abandon it because there has been a change in government,” he urged, stressing that the fight against galamsey is a collective responsibility.
Mr. Iddrisu also highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship training and education, noting that the university should focus on producing graduates who can create their own jobs. “How do we train a new generation of Ghanaians who are not just trained for the world of jobs but can initiate and create their own jobs?” he asked.
The Minister expressed concern about the challenges facing UPSA, including petitions from faculty and staff, and allegations of political influence in decision-making. He assured the council that President Mahama would not interfere with the academic freedom of the institution and handed over a report of an investigation into the allegations to the council.
“I intend to hand over the report of the investigation to council so that you look into the merits of the matter,” Mr. Iddrisu said, emphasizing the need for the council to address the issues and preserve the integrity and reputation of the university.
The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) was established to provide professional education and training in areas such as accounting, business, and law. The institution has faced several challenges in recent times, including allegations of irregularities in appointment and promotion processes. The swearing-in of the new Governing Council is expected to bring stability and direction to the university.
