Over 40 killed in stampede at political rally in India

At least 40 people have died in a stampede during a political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, where actor-turned-politician Vijay was campaigning on Saturday.
Authorities said the rally drew tens of thousands of people, far exceeding the 10,000 originally approved by police.
“The actual crowd was more than double,” Tamil Nadu police chief V Selvaraj told Reuters, confirming that a case had been filed against three senior members of Vijay’s TVK party for alleged negligence.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin described the tragedy as “heartbreaking” and confirmed that the victims included nine children, 17 women, and 13 men.
“Another 51 people are being treated in hospitals,” he told reporters.
Witnesses said chaos broke out when the crowd surged unexpectedly, forcing Vijay to pause his speech.
Local television footage showed people collapsing and fainting in the tightly packed gathering. The rally resumed only after several hours of delay.
Vijay, a hugely popular film star making his political debut, expressed his grief in an online statement. “My heart is broken. I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow. I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those in hospital,” he said.
Families devastated by the tragedy are demanding answers. One man told ANI news agency outside a hospital,
“The elder one passed away, the younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in the ICU. What should I do?”
Chief Minister Stalin announced compensation of one million rupees ($11,300) for the families of those who died and pledged an official inquiry.
“This government will ensure accountability,” he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also described the incident as “deeply saddening,” offering condolences to the bereaved families in a message on X.
Stampedes are a recurring danger in India, with several deadly incidents this year alone, including during the Kumbh Mela festival and outside a major cricket stadium. Analysts warn that overcrowding and weak crowd management continue to put lives at risk at public gatherings.
