Ashanti Minister confirms Obuasi shooting that injured Dompoase chief

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has confirmed a shooting incident at a funeral in Obuasi that left the Adansi Dompoase chief injured.

In a statement shared on social media, the Minister said the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council received a briefing indicating that the incident occurred on Saturday, 29 November, during a funeral ceremony where a firearm was discharged, injuring Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, the Adanse Dompoasehene.

He noted that security officers intervened quickly to restore order.

“The Police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, a 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.

He explained that the chief received medical care shortly after the incident and had since been discharged home, adding that his condition was stable.

Dr. Amoakohene stressed that the episode underscored the importance of the Interior Ministry’s temporary ban on firearms at funerals and traditional events.

He said the policy was introduced to safeguard communities from preventable harm and to ensure that such gatherings remain peaceful.

“This incident reinforces the importance of the temporary ban imposed by the interior ministry on the use of firearms during funerals and traditional gatherings across the country. The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he wrote.

He urged the public to respect the directive, stating that strict adherence would help prevent similar occurrences.

According to him, maintaining calm and order at social gatherings is essential for community safety, particularly given the large crowds that funerals in the region often attract.

The Minister encouraged residents to cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.

He affirmed that the Regional Coordinating Council remained committed to preserving peace and strengthening safety measures across the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Amoakohene added that the Council would continue to partner with law enforcement agencies to enforce regulations and support interventions aimed at protecting lives and maintaining public confidence in security operations.
