IGP not dead, disregard reckless rumours – Police

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting that Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has died, insisting the claims are entirely false.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday afternoon, the Service said its attention had been drawn to “speculation that the Inspector-General of Police is deceased,” but stressed that “the IGP is alive and well and going about his duties as expected.”
The statement urged officers, relatives, and the public to ignore what it described as baseless fabrications deliberately circulated to cause fear and confusion.
According to the Service, the rumours are not only malicious but also illegal.
It cautioned individuals behind the false claims to be mindful that spreading disinformation is an offence, and warned that those responsible will face prosecution once identified.
“We would like to caution persons behind these malicious, insensitive, and reckless claims to note that disinformation constitutes an offence,” the Service stated, adding that the Ghana Police will take appropriate action.
The clarification comes days after the Police Council has recommended a two-year re-engagement for Mr. Yohuno as he approaches his statutory retirement in December 2025.
The recommendation has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama for consideration, and expectations are that the President will endorse it.
The Council’s decision reflects confidence in the IGP’s leadership and ongoing reforms within the Service.
The Police Service emphasized that Mr. Yohuno continues to discharge his mandate without interruption and remains fully engaged with national security duties.
